Arab Nationalism – Pan Arabism:
Ataturk’s reforms in Turkey spread and inspired nationalist in its neighboring country Iran. Arab nationalism increased after World War I which led to a rise in Pan-Arabism. Nationalist movements built on shared heritage of Arabs. From the Arabian Peninsula-North Africa, Pan-Arabism wanted to free Arabs from foreign control and unite them in their own state. Territories were set up by European Nations at the Paris Peace Conference after World War I which made Arabs angry. During World War I Arabs helped the allies fight the central powers and the
Ottomans and in return they were promised independence. The allies spliced up ottoman land giving France Syria and Lebanon and the British got Palestine, Iraq, and Transjordan. Arabs felt betrayed and were furious and the Arabs protested and revolted throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s against western imperialism. The British mandate of Palestine really angered the Arabs and Arab nationalist had to face European Zionist
which were Jewish nationalist with their own dreams of creating a Palestine homeland. The betrayal by the allies really spiked nationalist in
Iran.
