Amritsar Massacre
The mass murder of native Indians, known as the Amritsar Massacre, killed more than 1,000 peaceful citizens. The assembled people gathered in the Jallianwala Bagh, a garden city in Amritsar, to peacefully protest against the arrest of two leaders in the Indian National Congress. Edward Dyer was the British General who, upon seeing the crowd, ordered his men to open fire on the unarmed and non-violent group of innocent people. Soldiers opened fire on the protesters and blocked the openings from the square. Blocking the only opening and without giving a warning, the soldiers brutally murdered many innocent protesters. Nearly four hundred people were killed and more than a thousand were severely injured. This ghastly event of the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh culminated in the mass Indian uprisings and eventually led to the Indian Freedom. But, the tragic day of the massacre in Amritsar will always bring a bloodcurdling and terrifying memory in the minds of all Indians.
