Reza Khan: Iran resented the British and Russians for their spheres of influence on their land. Army officer Reza Khan in 1925 overthrew
the monarch of Iran which was called shah. Reza set up his own Pahlavi dynasty and made himself a shah. Reza helped modernize Iran to make it more independent. Factories, roads, railroads, and a strengthen army was built. Reza continued to modernize Iran by like Turkey taking on Latin, forcing the people to wear western clothing, setting up modern secular schools, replacing Islamic law with secular law, and by encouraging women to change and take part in public life. Reza also supported wealth of urban Iranians. When Iran modernized it started to have better terms with the British. The British gave a larger share of profits to Iran and insisted Iranian workers be hired at all levels. Later in history we will see that oil will become a major factor in Iranian foreign affairs. Like in Turkey also in Iran Muslim leaders didn’t try to introduce western ways and were not open to it. Reza Khan can be compared to Mustafa Kemal by the way he too modernized Iran. |
